Apple Rugs' ranges of modern handwoven rugs combine the wonderful look and feel of traditional rug weaving techniques with contemporary designs and subtle colours. They make a quality flooring statement based on fine rug-making, natural colour tones and modern design.

These handwoven rugs are made entirely of wool, usually New Zealand wool (the best rug wool in the world today). There is for example no backing under the rug, just the underside of the wool design, as you would expect in a purely woven product. The rug therefore has none of the stiffness evident in many modern rugs, but has the soft, "floppy" construction of a true woven product, and sits beautifully on the floor from day one.

The colours are also subtle, natural tones that enhance the hand crafted look and feel of these rugs.

Our handwoven rugs are generally made in North Eastern India, in Uttar Pradesh, towards the border with Nepal. Uttar Pradesh is India's largest state by population, and its economy has an important heritage of craft and cottage industries such as rug weaving.

The Bhadohi district is an especially important centre and is one of the largest rug and carpet making regions in the whole of India, producing a wide range of rug and carpet styles. The River Ganges flows nearby , and the weather, which is cool in winter and hot in summer plays an important role in rug making, for example in drying rugs in the open.
