The bedroom rug

Bedroom rugs are usually there to provide warmth, softness and colour. Of all the rugs in the house, it's the most likely to be walked on barefoot, and at times of the day when the home might feel a little cooler. These are especially important factors with so many homes adopting a bare wood floor look throughout.

In terms of size, the options can be for a rug placed under the bed and extending around it, smaller rugs just to the sides of the bed, or a rug placed the in the room separate to the bed.

The classic look is a large single rug, with the bed sat on it and enough rug showing on either side to give comfortable space to walk around the bed. This is especially effective for beds with legs, which allow you to see under the bed.

The whole effect is helped if the rug is also longer than the bed, giving a good amount of rug at the foot of the bed. It's similar to the way designers like to see sofa and chairs all sitting on the rug in the living room and creating a luxurious and "un-squeezed" look.

In the bedroom, however, many designers like to see the rug laid just short of any bedside tables, giving more rug area to the bottom of the bed.

A good place to look for a bedroom rug to fit under a double bed is therefore under Extra Large rugs of at least 200x300cms sizes. The standard double bed is 137cms wide by 190cms long (a King Size bed is usually 150cms wide and 198cms long).

Colour-wise, most people seem to go for calmer colours and often in plain or simple designs (after all, a lot of any detailed design will be lost under the bed!).

But these rules may not always be best for you, so take a look at ideas for using smaller rugs in the paragraphs below.

Bedroom shaggy rugs

"Yeah Baby...!" shouts Austin Powers as he drags the shag pile rug back to his and its Sixties lair. Maybe the thick, long pile shaggy rug did pick up a bit of a reputation for modern, sexy pads in the Sixties and Seventies. But in recent years there has been a big revival, in fact making them more popular than ever in all types of homes.

In a world of renovated wooden floorboards, new wood laminates and other hard floors, UK flooring has become stern, cold stuff. This includes bedrooms, where more than in any other room, people want something extra soft and attractive to walk barefoot on and wake up to.

Shaggy rugs can be the perfect solution, providing deep, soft texture, as well as a huge variety of colour options for the bedroom.

Some people wonder about cleaning under the bed, especially with a long shagpile rug, and some about the cost given the amount of rug you ended up seeing! An alternative is to place two smaller shaggies either side of the bed as bedside rugs. For narrower, longer bedside rugs, consider a runner. Many of our current shaggy rugs come in runner sizes.

Bedroom rug or bedside rug?

Although the large rug under the whole bed has all that elegance and style, many people now also consider having two smaller rugs on each side of the bed. The standard small rug sizes are around 80 x 150cms or 90 x 150cms depending on the collection. Lengthwise these rugs will fit just over three-quarters of the length of a standard double bed.

If you have bedside tables, meanwhile, put them on the floor rather than on the rug, leaving only about a foot or so of floor left exposed at the bottom of the bed.

The classic bedroom look of a large double bed in the middle of the room is also becoming less common. Modern houses and apartments tend to have smaller rooms. Even in a larger house, sometimes only the master bedroom has the right size, with the other bedrooms being smaller. In these rooms the bed is often against a wall, or more likely two walls and in a corner.

Again, the smaller rug can be the answer, providing warm, soft texture next to the bed.

However, you can also also go for more of an impact with a larger rug, sat either next to the bed, or under the bed, and then covering the main part of the floor. You get a soft, warm rug to get out of the bed onto, and add texture and colour to the main part of the room. It can also be used to make the room less of a bedroom and more of a living space with a bed in it.

Runners good in the bedroom?

Runners can be a really useful idea in some bedrooms, as they provide a narrow rug for one or both sides of the bed. Usually they are longer than the bed itself. But if you have something at the bottom of the bed such as a pine chest, Ottoman or another small rug, then this can be very effective.

Contemporary shaggy runners, or thick wool runners can work well in this situation. To match the bedside runner with a small rug at the foot of the bed will require the rug collection to have quite a small rug, as a standard double bed is only 137cms wide, and a kingsize about 150cms.

Bedroom sheepskin rugs

Sheepskin rugs have long been a classic designer touch for the bedroom. They are suitably warm and soft underfoot, with a sensational feel as your toes sink into the long, super soft sheepskin pile.

Sheepskins are also light enough pick up and shake clean outside, which is a great way to occasionally freshen up the rug. And if you want a change, they are easy to move and use in other rooms, or roll up and store

Sheepskins come in the standard fleece size (usually about 90cms x 60cms max width by length, but remember they have an uneven fleece shape. From here, you have double fleeces (two sheepskins), quatro (four) fleeces, sexto (six) fleeces) and octo (eight fleeces).

These different size fleeces are actually created by piecing together individual fleeces, but invisibly so, and the result is just one complete rug, just in much bigger sizes than a standard single sheepskin.

Note that the double sheepskin size is usually made with the fleeces end on: ie making a long, narrow rug, about 300cm x 60cm and perfect to have one along each side of the bed, making for perfect bedside rugs.

An animal in the bedroom

Just in case your interested, animal prints are often seen as a fun addition to a bedroom, adding a touch of the exotic and flamboyant.
