Rug Colour Ideas

Colour research specialists Pantone have released their predictions for the colours that will dominate the international catwalks this Spring.

According to Leatrice Eisemen, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute, "This season consumers are looking for a state of thoughtful, emotional and artistic equilibrium."

In this environment, designers are mixing soft pastels with bright vivid tones… "Inspired by a mixture of blooming flowers, travels abroad, and strong, confident women."

Although the forecasts are primarily for the men's and women's fashion industry, their impact there does spread across other designer areas, including home interiors and ultimately rug designs.

Underlying the palette are some soft pastels, which Pantone points out are similar to nature's own backdrop. For example, Placid Blue with its association with clear blue skies. Violet Purple, "a romantic, vintage purple, evokes wistful nostalgia," (and perhaps reminiscent of lavender or heather). And Hemlock, which is also a natural foliage tone, and a calmer green than the limes that have been so popular in recent years.

Alongside these background pastels are the neutral Sand, a warm, "toasted" neutral, and Paloma, a sort of dove grey that is a very neutral tone that can also work with most other colours and add a "sophisticated poise."

Three stronger colours in the selection are Cayenne, Freesia and Celosia Orange. All three can be paired with the previous colours to produce vibrant and eye-catching combinations, or with each other to produce a warm, lively, slightly exotic spice tone look that has already proved so popular over the past year.

Our Joseph Spice rugs have proved exceptionally popular in bringing this look to flooring, while rugs such as the Stripes Red also offer similar warm tones.

Finally, Pantone's colour predictions for Spring 2014 finish with the very vibrant Radiant Orchid (a rosy, light purple) and Dazzling Blue, both of which it is claimed can be paired across this season's palette and are especially effective in accompanying the pastels, where they add a boldness and vivacity.

This renewed emphasis on blues and purples may be an interesting development in rug design. The brighter warm colours were already proving very popular last year, but it has been a while since blues and purples have held such importance. Dazzling Blue was selected by Pantone as it's colour for Spring 2014, and Radiant Orchid ultimately as it's overall colour for the year 2014, and so they are sure to make an impact on designers this year.

This early designer thinking and its first manifestations on the cat walks of this Spring is set to extend its influence into mass market fashions, beauty care and interior design throughout the rest of year.
